Jim and Brigid Stewart’s daughter, Katy, was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma, a rare liver cancer, in April 2009.

A beneficiary of the 2009 Carnival, the Stewarts continue to battle and the Max Cure Foundation continues its commitment to this family who has taught and coached thousands of students on Eastern Long Island.

At the age of 4, Lily was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumor. Her treatment started immediately. She received an aggressive combination of radiation and chemotherapy simultaneously for six weeks. Even though treatments continued throughout the school year, her strong will did not let them deter her from attending school and in fact, only missed the days on which she received treatment. Though she was able to start kindergarten, the disease was beginning to take its toll. On October 27, 2009, Lily underwent surgery to relieve pressure on her brain. She never recovered, and a week later on November 4th, she passed away peacefully surrounded by her favorite pink toys in her room with her family and friends.

Dr. Oren Becher is a pediatric oncologist who specializes in the treatment of children with brain tumors. Dr. Becher’s team has recently developed one such mouse model for brainstem glioma, a rare brain tumor that develops primarily in children and is currently incurable, and will continue to develop mouse models for other types of brain tumors, all of which can be used for screening of novel drugs or combinations, to finally find a cure for these children.
